Parents today often gravitate toward a behavior modification approach to parenting. But relying on rewards and punishment to get things done seldom changes the heart. Parents say, " If you clean your room you can go out and play," or "Finish your homework, then you can watch TV." The problem is that behavior modification appeals to the selfishness in kids. It basically says, "If you do what I say, you can have what you want." Children then learn to ask the wrong kinds of questions. Instead of asking " What's in it for me?" we want kids to ask the question, "What is the right thing to do?" Whether you are co-parenting with your husband or wife, are a single parent, or a step parent, parent coaching for heart change will start the process of getting your children to do the right thing.
